Short Bio
I have been practicing in the NRV as a clinical psychologist for the last 20 years with an emphasis on providing generalist outpatient mental health services from a cognitive-behavioral orientation. I am currently employed as a clinical psychologist at Carilion Clinic (NRV) in their outpatient mental health clinic and see a diverse community population for a variety of mental health diagnoses. My previous work as a staff psychologist in Home-Based Primary Care at the Salem VA Medical Center focused on providing mental health in a behavioral medicine setting, primarily working with geriatric, medically complex Veterans. I completed an externship, predoctoral clinical internship, and postdoctoral fellowship within the Department of Veteran Affairs before entering federal service for 17 additional years. In 2025, I left federal service and joined Carilion Clinic as a staff psychologist. While I am a staunch proponent of empirically supported treatments (e.g., CBT, ACT), I have always sought to incorporate Humanistic and Existential perspectives in clinical practice, emphasizing empathy, therapeutic alliance, and the inherent value of all my patients. In 2018, I returned to my alma mater at Virginia Tech as an instructor in the Psychology Department. I have always enjoyed teaching and have found that my clinical work and my teaching each serve to enrich the other. In my free time, I enjoy the company of my partner (Jess) and two children (Oliver and Lucy), playing and performing music in the Blacksburg area under the Furious Jones moniker, woodworking, reading history, and exercising.
