We are very happy that you are interested in our department. Please explore our curriculum requirements and additional materials on our support page for majors and minors.

Please note that the Department of Psychology adheres to the 'senior rule,' which is stated in the Undergraduate Catalog as:

"Undergraduate students must be enrolled in their major(s) [and minor(s)] of choice prior to the beginning of their senior year, or by the time they have 30 semester hours to complete before their graduation."

How to Change Your Major to Psychology

Students may add or change their primary major through HokieSpa during the designated Change of Major Application Deadlines. Click the link for step-by-step instructions.

How to Add/Change Psychology as your SECONDARY major

The Department of Psychology accepts and processes requests for second majors at any time (with the exception of fall/spring course requests).

To add or change a Psychology major as your secondary major, you must download and complete the Change of Major/Minor Form and schedule an appointment with an advisor in Psychology to make a plan for enrolling in those courses.

Steps to schedule an appointment with an advisor in Psychology:

  1. Login to Navigate--go to https://vt.campus.eab.com (*right click, open link in new tab) and Click Schedule an Appointment (Blue Button)
  2. What type of Appointments? Select Advising
  3. What Service do you want? Search for Psychology
  4. You will see the availability of Explore Psychology and Explore Psychology Minor Advising. Select Explore Psychology Advising

Once you discuss the plan with an advisor, you must submit the form to the Psychology Document Submission Portal (the advisor you meet with will provide this link in the meeting) who will then submit it to the College of Science Dean’s Office.

How to Add/Change a Psychology Minor

The Department of Psychology accepts and processes requests for minors at any time (with the exception of fall/spring course requests).

To add or change a psychology minor, please email psycadvising@vt.edu. An advisor will answer any questions you may have, and give you instructions on how to download and complete the Change of Major/Minor Form. If you have somewhat detailed questions, you and the advisor may decide to set up an appointment, which you can do by following the instructions just above (for #4, you would select Explore Psychology Minor Advising).

Once you complete the form, you must submit it to the Psychology Document Submission Portal (the advisor will provide the link via email), and the advisor will then submit it to the College of Science Dean’s Office.
