About the speaker

Elizabeth Santa Ana, PhD is a psychologist and health services researcher at the Charleston VA Medical Center and she is an Associate Professor in the Addiction Sciences Division in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She is the Associate Director of the Charleston Health Equity and Rural Outreach Innovation Center (HEROIC) and she is Co-Director of the VA Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. Dr. Santa Ana received her PhD from the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY Albany) and completed her fellowship in Advanced Psychiatry and Psychology through the Mental Illness Research Education Clinical Center (MIRECC) at Yale University School of Medicine and the West Haven VA Medical Center. Her primary research interest focuses on the development and efficacy testing of modalities designed to enhance and maximize delivery of evidence-based interventions (EBTs), particularly innovative methods for delivering EBTs in ways that are practical, feasible, and provide greater accessibility for patients with addictive disorders. Dr. Santa Ana has been Co-PI or Co-Investigator on several NIH and NIAAA studies evaluating psychosocial and pharmacological treatments in PTSD and SUD and she is a Co-I on a currently funded Health Science Research Merit, ‘Web-Based Provider Training for Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPEWeb), led by Dr. Sudie Back. Dr. Santa Ana has conducted training in both national and international forums in COPE and collaborates with the Strong Star Training initiative, run by the University of Texas Austin, to train VA providers in COPE on a national level.
