Kathleen J. Sikkema, recently appointed Chair of Sociomedical Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Tech in 1991. Previously, as the Gosnell Family Professor of Global Health, and Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, she served as the Director of Clinical Psychology and Founding Director of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Center for AIDS Research (CFAR), the Global Mental Health Initiative and Doctoral Programs at the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI). Dr. Sikkema is also an honorary professor at the University of Cape Town. For thirty years, Dr. Sikkema’s research program has focused on the conduct of community-based randomized, controlled HIV prevention and mental health intervention trials, across a variety of populations, both in the U.S. and in South Africa. Her expertise includes clinical trials focused on traumatic stress, global mental health, gender violence, HIV care engagement, community-level prevention interventions, and university-community research collaboration.
